A clue: it's from a big, classic SF series of books, where these sorts of quotations introduce new chapters.

Since the word alphabet comes from the contraction of Alpha and Beta, even if Beta wasn't the second letter in the Greek alphabet (which it is), it would still be the second Greek letter in the word alphabet.
