OK, since cake has been mentioned. Where would you find the Cake Room and in what SF-related context?

Clue - I may not be entirely truthful about this.

If this is the delicious and moist cake I think it is, then the Cake Room is in Aperture Science's Enrichment Centre, where it sits as an incentive for test subjects to successfully negotiate the various test chambers using the Portal Gun.

Another set of three required: name three SF brand names, from three different sources. These should be completely fictional - so e.g. "Nike Mercurys" from Max Barry's Jennifer Government wouldn't count.

"Feckel Freezer" (not 100% sure of spelling) from Frederik Pohl's The Tunnel Under the World

"The Standard Dirigible Construction Co. of Milwall and Buenos Ayres" from Kipling's With the Night Mail (and about another eight or ten companies in this one story)

and of course "General Products" hulls (made from single gigantic molecules) from Larry Niven's Known Space series.

That'll do it! There are loads of others, of course, but the three I thought of were Slurm (from Futurama), Ono-Sendai cyberspace decks (from Neuromancer), and Sirius Cybernetics (from THHGTTG).

Back to you, ffutures …

OK - A British author's SF play (1962) was published as a novel in 1969 (co-written with another person) with a sequel in 1974. Name the author and the play.

Clue 1: The primary author, a scientist, died in 2001. His first novel was written in 1957.

Clue 2: His co-writer is still alive, is not a scientist, but last wrote in the 1980s. They were related.

Clue 3: The author also co-wrote an early TV SF series starring Julie Christie, her breakthrough role.

Right author - the play the question was about was actually Rockets in Ursa Major by Fred Hoyle, novel by Fred and Geoffrey Hoyle, but since nobody else seemed to be getting close I think we might as well call you the winner. Your turn!

<chortles> I've caught myself repeating a question before - now spud's at it!

Nightfall - original short by Isaac Asimov, novelisation by Robert Silverberg.
