Welcome Moonrunner!

For a quick start you can sell your laser and missiles to buy Injectors in a high-tech system.
Moreover there are other options in Start Choices OXP.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Ended up doing a bit of lurking but zero playing. Time to get started on getting used to the controls now.. I'd do it tomorrow but my employer would probably frown on playing Oolite on the job 8)

I might end up purchasing my first joystick since the old C64.. After I sold it for my first 2400bps modem for the 386, I've only used the keyboard/mouse combo. However, I see how a joystick can help with this type of game..

So what's the optimal input device setup for Oolite? Joystick+keyboard or using some sort of a game pad?

Joystick (Logitech Extreme 3D Pro) and keyboard for me (Oolite has good config options for joysticks).

second what cody said. mine calls itself "extreme 3D Pro"
has a nice paddle for speed control, lots of buttons to configure.. but i still find that most flying and docking is done with keyboard. i only seem to use the joystick for fighting. they flew the Enterprise by a touch screen keyboard... only brought out the joystick when they separated the saucer ....lol
Arthur: OK. Leave this to me. I'm British. I know how to queue.
OR i could go with

I'm onto my second 3D Pro - after five years of heavy usage, the old one needed replacing (though it still works). Be aware that some ain't built quite as well as they once were. I had to return my second one to Amazon twice - the first because its base was a tad warped (the whole thing wobbled slightly), the second because the actual stick part was far too loose. Don't be afraid to return one if it ain't quite right. Get a good one though, and it's very good value!

Well fellow pilots,

what can I say? I guess the most important thing about me is that I am pretty much a space aficionado (as you may notice by my nickname). I never played the original Elite back in the day (which I do regret btw), but I had my go at this one and I found it to be the game I have been looking for. It's got enough systems to play in, a well enough thought-through universe, ships, technology. Plus, the OXP thing is amazingly awesome, makes the game infinitely scalable - which is unique to Oolite - or let's say there's no other game I know of utilizing this kind of mechanism.

I have a few simple questions, though (one of which I believe to know the answer to):

- Do we have a static universe in Oolite? I mean if the systems in the eight galaxies are always regenerated when you start a new commander. From what I have seen, it's static (which would make it easier and much more playable for me).

- Where can I find the OXP that makes atmospheric effects as seen on this post for example ? Any pointers or download links are appreciated :)

- Is there some kind of API or database set or something for items and ships in-game? If so I'd have fun in building an item database or some sorts :)

Ya so that's basically it... I'm looking forward to building up my flying skills, getting to know the Ooniverse, the ships, enemies, stations. I got a lot to read up to and learn. Obviously a joystick might be in order so well. I'm on Ubuntu - any compatible models?

Glad to be here, fly safe.

The new atmosphere effects are in the trunk nightly build - not yet in the release version of Oolite.
If you use the nightly, nothing is guaranteed - it's the experimental build. And welcome aboard!

Hi pleiadian, and welcome.
I'd certainly recommend a joystick. I have an ancient Logitech Attack 3 which works out-the-box on Linux (Mint 17 here) and as far as I know the more recent ones are just as compatible. There is a joystick set-up section in the menu so you can allocate functions to buttons etc.

Yes, the Ooniverse is static - always the same 2048 star systems.
If you haven't found it already, the Wiki is a useful resource.
