There's a PR on GitHub that says is fixes mac Builds for xcode 10, Link here: https://github.com/OoliteProject/oolite/pull/318. I don't have Mac so I can't confirm anything but it might be worth examining.

Hmm. Yes, that is a problem. It should definitely have more roles than that.

Version 2.17 of Commies has just been released. Apart from suppressing those debug messages, a couple of spawning issues have been addressed for Commisar Limousines and Giant Ray's. As a bonus, you can now save your game at Astro Factories and Collective SLAPU stations.

OK, I can confirm there was a conflict with Interstellar Tweaks, which I've resolved in version 1.3.9, which is now available via the download manager.

OK, I think I've found a conflict, although it doesn't happen every time. Most times I'll jump into interstellar space and everything's fine, but occasionally I'll arrive and see nothing. You can select and adjust what MFD's are displayed during flight - ":" to select a new MFD slot, then ";" to cycle your available MFD options. To do all this when docked requires Norby's HUD Selector to be installed.

That sounds like you've got Interstellar Help, Interstellar Tweaks, and some Thargoid expansions installed. Could you copy the list of OXP's from your latest.log file so I can check to see what might be conflicting? Thanks!

The planet should be generated within visual range of your ship. You shouldn't need a telescope to see it. If it's not being created, either another OXP if causing a conflict or there's a bug. It would be helpful to get a copy of your latest.log file from a session where you jumped in and didn't see...
