Doctor Who

The new Doctor is a woman. Fair enough, she looks good, but will she be able to pull the "THE" in the Doctor? Are we going to be afflicted with teen boy side kicks? My fav Doc was Jon Pertwee, what with the silly cape and Bessie the yellow brick of a car. The car is a one of. Commissioned by ...

Re: Maps

Re: ffutures map.   I always thought the 'there' in 'Here there be Dragons' was always there. Sounds more olde English that way. Ah. The night sky. Never appreciated till seen from the laying down position, clear sky and miles from the nearest town. I remember laying there for hours ...

Maps

What is a map to you? To me it was and is an open invitation to go look. An invitation that could not be refused. A boy on a bike and a map in hand. An adventure started. My world map was skirted by a railway, a river and 2 'major' roads. A library. A universe at the time. The bike wheels grew with ...

Re: Open Street Map

Now that beats Ordnance Survey maps for quick reference hands down. If your driving. As most people that first see it, they will look up somewhere they know. Yup. Bloomin great. If your cycling or walking in the UK, most petrol stations and local libraries still carry Ordnance Survey maps of the loc...

Re: WHY oh why?

Yes I am aware of that. Playing the game and changing the game are like chalk and cheese to me. So every time developers change the base. I get a bitty lost for a while. My only/main peeve was the way markets were handled. I didn't want realistic markets. How easy would it have been to set in system...

Re: A puff piece

We called that "gum bleeder"
Then there was a toffee we called 'tooth puller' It was hard as brick till it got soft with suck/chewing. Then it would grip your teeth.
On hind sight. I think parents invented it to keep kids quite.

WHY oh why?

Yes I know, very late to say. But why change the base game so much? I've played from the original Elite to Oo 1.80. Stopped there as I didn't think it was the same game anymore. Do you really think that making it more 'realistic', 'complicated'. Makes it more fun? Here's how I thought of Oo1.65 Thin...

A puff piece

Intended pun in title. Came across this article in the BBCs internet news; http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20170609-why-the-eccles-cake-comes-with-a-warning written by Amanda Ruggeri The last line had me guffawing. If you can't bother reading the article. It's about an old English biscuit/cake calle...

Re: The Dice Man

Well Montana, that would be a good idea. You'd have to be young and quite stupid to apply it to real life. I was once both. Got over the young bit. Applying 'The Dice Man' mentality might have done in the young bit too. A Caddy Alpha commander. Welcome to the best ship in the Ooniverse. Mine is an O...

Re: Brexit vote, the zombie apocalypse and other fallout.

: anyone who votes for a political party because they fancy an extra Monday off shouldn't really be allowed to choose a TV channel, let alone a government. One small reminder of the limits of the private sector - and especially, why the private sector should never be allowed to own or control any f...

Re: The Dice Man

Ah.. the "subversive" ploy.
Only second to the "Ban" ploy to insure sales.
Who owns the publishing houses?
Or is that applying the "it's a conspiracy" ploy?

Re: Tumbleweed Watch

OO you just wish they were crickets. Crickets are for late summer evenings and hardly intrude. Cicadas on the other hand.. Very loud and go most of the night. Will make you into a psychotic insect hunter. Apparently still survive in Nevada bomb testing grounds the day after tests. Cockroaches don't ...

The Dice Man

Just wondering if anyone read this book from the 70's? Not the heavily edited American version. When I read it, I was sure it was total fiction. But tried a year or so with a coin when I couldn't make up my mind. NOT recommended for anyone with commitments. Stranger paths have been followed for sure...

Re: IF magazine archive online

Has anyone ever heard of the "Tom Swift" series? I remember reading them at about 9 or 10 YO. Thought they were the bees knees in SiFi Space adventures.
