Re: Idiots allowed to vote.

There is more to having money "off the books" than covering costs. Money that doesnt officially exist can be used for politically dubious purposes (see Iran Contra affair for an example). And there are many other reasons, most obviously being embedded in the industry gives a huge amount of knowledge...

Re: Hyperspace tunnel time

I think it would be easy enough to scale it to say one second per LY, so even long jumps wouldnt be too long. Might be a nice idea but hard to explain away the squared relationship. Perhaps something like 0.5 + (d/3)^2 would give an impression of the squared relationship, whilst maintaining a range ...

Re: Hyperspace tunnel time

Quite right, but that wasnt the question. He would like the actual real time consumed "in the tunnel" to vary according to the length of the jump. The problem with this, arguments about what the tunnel actually is aside, is the squared relationship, meaning that a long jump would be reaaaaaaaaaly lo...

Re: This might be a first: request for advice on career advi

The problem with linkedin is that it is a cv farm for recruiters. People who are qualified and experienced are hoovered up, especially in branches like IT. It does not perform so well for people starting out.

Re: Oolite Multiplayer? Please read

No, listen guys, please. The primary reason is simply that it is too hard to do. The secondary and related reason is that noone on the dev team wants to invest the time to make a multiplayer version, at least not from where we are now. To be honest as I have said before, if I wanted to write a multi...

Re: Why Johnny can’t code

HTML and javascript are everywhere, Id imagine they cover the entry point of the old basic. If not, then java is pretty pervasive, as is C but I cant imagine the average 7 year old going out and getting gcc.

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous - Kickstarter!

even though I'm not 100% sure my Mac can take it Just for the record it currently looks unlikely that there will be a mac version in the short term. It currently look like the target will only just be made, and the stretch goal of a mac version is fairly far off. Quite what that means for the mac v...

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous - Kickstarter!

1. The game can operate totally in offline mode, with a dynamically generating galaxy according to built in rules. It will lack the potential richness and dynacism that other player interactions might cause (i.e. trade wars, political shifts etc) in favour of random events. If you don't go online -...

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous - Kickstarter!

I still can't believe all the £20 pledges haven't gone yet... Personally 20 quid isnt a big deal to me, but Im not keen on promising to pay for promises. I dont really like the kickstarter model, its just like microinvestment, without actually having an investment -- so thats a preorder then. It mi...

That sounds like an OXP "Asteroid Storm" I think. http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Asteroid_Storm

It does some clever work around to kill the main station.

Re: Laser beam(s) - not like in the classical Elite

There is of course the other obvious problem which is that many ships have lasers modelled and the point of origin moved to the barrel. How do we retro-fit multiple beams to tham in a way that doesnt look utterly stupid? What do we do about detecting hits? What if two of the beams cross a target and...

Re: Ship with 2 forward lasers?

It isnt so much that 2 lasers are explicitly prevented, but that the code assumes (and in some places enforces) that there are only 4 possible slots: front rear left and right. Each mount point can only take one weapon, and the weapon must be one of the supported ones ie there is no "double laser" y...

Yes, heaven forbid anyone should try to improve the game by changing the planet names to things that can actually be pronounced and remembered.

Re: Why does Elite still matter?

I think the odd thing about Frontier Developments is that they have never "got" elite. Whilst Frontier and FFE where in many ways interesting and original games, they were in no way elite IMHO. I imagine elite IV if it ever happens will be some horrendous Massively Multiplayer Online Simulator (ie n...
