Re: How Does Avoiding the Spacelanes Break Gameplay?

pirates should logically have bases way off the lane and hang about at the edge of the lane picking targets and diving in for the juicy looking ones then ferrying their haul home from time to time. maybe for some systems they would H in, make a hit then H back out.

Re: Fuel Scooping

Im not too sure about all this. Think of the new jameson who hasnt got enough money for a scoop, who now has all kinds of extra hassle just to be able to get to another system and sell his tiny collection of wares. I would rather see (yes it a big change) something more along the lines of larger shi...

Re: Is it possible to add in Gravity/Inertia?

As for the velocity dissipating, since there's little to no friction in space, shouldn't the ship maintain its velocity (for the most part) until it fires the engine in the opposite direction? Depends what you mean by "should". Thats a complete change of the way the game works, something that Front...

Re: Oolite 2.0 or II

I cannot see the point of making the game start easier. Because the whole experience is about the changing and evolving play. You start relatively fragile and need to play accordingly even if you are an experience pilot the basic cobra simply isnt up to too much. As you progress you get the kit need...

Re: Medium Freighter Shortage.

try a vortex.... 3 cargo bays... 30 ton each.. 1 will actually be hidden from all scans so you can carry contraband with impunity. fast, powerful and nasty vessel. I have just realised that this is a bit weird. Imagine you are a customs official and you are standing in front of a ship. First thing ...

Re: Frontier Developments plc Full year trading update

So if I read that correctly there are between 20 and 40 players in the ED universe at any one time. I don't know if that is good or bad Its bad, at least for the viability of the game. ED was seen as being an MMO in space, remember all the statements about how "offline play doesnt make sense"? At t...

Re: TOS or Next Generation?

I agree that TOS was a serious attempt at real SciFi and I think it did a good job. There were pragmatic things like teleporters and warp drive that arent proper hard science but frankly thats not the point and it didnt ruin it for me, it allowed them to do something other than just sit in space for...

Re: Leaving the Ship

First time i saw frontier elite i thought wow you can land on the planet. Question is what kind of game engine has oolite... Basicly it doesnt have an engine. It just is. It would, I guess, be possible to use javascript to swap the player from their ship to a special ship that somehow is bound to t...

Re: Announcing Schlongs of Elite v1.0

I can see a place for special missions ferrying porn/prostitutes whatever but other than that I cant really see a place for "adult content". Ships with dicks dont make sense to me outside of a kind of rule34 joke. As for slaves, I tihnk treating them as a commodity is kind of the point. It isnt 5 sl...

Re: Idiots allowed to vote.

There is more to having money "off the books" than covering costs. Money that doesnt officially exist can be used for politically dubious purposes (see Iran Contra affair for an example). And there are many other reasons, most obviously being embedded in the industry gives a huge amount of knowledge...

Re: Hyperspace tunnel time

I think it would be easy enough to scale it to say one second per LY, so even long jumps wouldnt be too long. Might be a nice idea but hard to explain away the squared relationship. Perhaps something like 0.5 + (d/3)^2 would give an impression of the squared relationship, whilst maintaining a range ...

Re: Hyperspace tunnel time

Quite right, but that wasnt the question. He would like the actual real time consumed "in the tunnel" to vary according to the length of the jump. The problem with this, arguments about what the tunnel actually is aside, is the squared relationship, meaning that a long jump would be reaaaaaaaaaly lo...

The problem with linkedin is that it is a cv farm for recruiters. People who are qualified and experienced are hoovered up, especially in branches like IT. It does not perform so well for people starting out.

Re: Oolite Multiplayer? Please read

No, listen guys, please. The primary reason is simply that it is too hard to do. The secondary and related reason is that noone on the dev team wants to invest the time to make a multiplayer version, at least not from where we are now. To be honest as I have said before, if I wanted to write a multi...

Re: Why Johnny can’t code

HTML and javascript are everywhere, Id imagine they cover the entry point of the old basic. If not, then java is pretty pervasive, as is C but I cant imagine the average 7 year old going out and getting gcc.
