Re: Science Fiction Trivia

OK, that's three from Rockdoctor Buttered Cats - definitely EmDrive - yes, wacky pseudo-science fun definitely counts. The Wheeler idea has made it into a couple of stories, but is it really silly enough? Well, one corollary of this is that if you can destroy even one particle the whole universe com...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Well, if you're sure? I was thinking of all of the Superman stuff as one answer. Let's have five SILLY space drives. They may be silly because of the effects described, or because they don't work too well, or work WAY too well, or have weird side effects For example, the Infinite Improbability Drive...

Re: DST (BST)

My atomic clocks laugh once again... apart from the one in the kitchen which of course is high up and greasy, and had a battery that was low enough on juice that it wasn't receiving the time signal. Now fixed, but annoying.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Superman (Kal El of Krypton) likes beef bourguignon with ketchup, pretzels with mustard, hot dogs, and his mom's rhubarb pie. But he has eaten some very weird things over the years: https://www.cbr.com/the-weirdest-things-superman-has-eaten/ And also from the DC comics canon, J'on J'onzz the Martian...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Another coffee-loving species - L. Neil Smith's The Nagasaki Vector (1983) has the alien Yamaguchians who developed sentience after eating coffee grounds and other caffeinated waste such as tea bags, and decided that the human who had fed them the stuff initially was god. They continue to drink coff...

Re: Problems with Planetfall

I don't think I've been slowing much, just using a very shallow approach angle, sounds like that's where I've been going wrong. Not sure why I haven't encountered this before, maybe I'm just out of practice. Later - yes, that fixed it. Final approach shot... https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/ffutures/...

Problems with Planetfall

Anyone else noticing problems with the Planetfall add-on since the new release? I haven't been able to land since the change, as soon as I get close to the ground the temperature rises and my ship explodes, regardless of how slowly I go in. There was a similar problem a couple of releases back, I'm ...

I saw Lexx but I'm damned if I can remember this weapon. Never mind, can't win them all.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

The Day of the Triffids, a novel by ‎John Wyndham, or the 1962 film of the same name, classics both. Umm, the triffids weren't aliens, as I recall. Strongly bred (and this was before the understanding of the structure of DNA) by human scientists in, as I recall Siberia, and then shipped around the ...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Re no. 4, I vaguely remember seeing a film at an SF convention which had weapons grown biologically out of bone and other materials, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was. Something like that?

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

OK, I should have looked harder at the others because I'm pretty sure that number 5 is Johnny Cab, the robot taxi driver from the film Total Recall.
